Osteoporosis – Are you at risk?
Men & Osteoporosis
1 in 3 men over 60 will have an osteoporotic fracture in Australia.4
Many people are aware that women can suffer from osteoporosis, but don’t understand that men are also at risk. Throughout adult life men experience a continual decline in androgen production – mostly testosterone. This decline also results in the loss of calcium from the skeleton and reduced bone density.10,15 In elderly men bone loss occurs at a rate of approximately 5 to 10% per decade, increasing further after the age of 75.15
Adequate calcium & vitamin D intake, as well as maintaining a healthy body weight and regular weight-bearing exercise where bone and muscles work against gravity will assist men in the prevention of osteoporosis. This includes walking, jogging, stair climbing and various team sports.
